# Madeira beaches and swimming: separate a coast visit from a swim

Plan a coastal outing that still works if you stay out of the water. A scenic shore or a natural pool is not confirmation of safe swimming.

## Choose the exact bathing place

Porto Moniz is an option to investigate for volcanic natural pools and north-coast sights. Use the municipal bathing pages to identify the facility you mean. Do not treat every pool or stretch of shore as having the same managed access, facilities or supervision.

## Check whether a swim fits your group

Ask the facility about water entry and exit, steps, supervision and the facilities your group needs. Decide whether everyone can manage the access and conditions. A weather reading or a photograph cannot establish sea state, water quality or safety at the bathing place.

## Be ready to keep the visit on land

Follow closures, signs and staff instructions on arrival, even if you planned a swim. If information is missing or conditions are unsuitable, stay out of the water. Keep a land-based alternative whose access you have checked, and confirm the return journey rather than relying on a late change of plan.

## Official sources

Visit Madeira describes Porto Moniz and its volcanic natural pools; Município de Porto Moniz publishes local bathing-facility information. Confirm facility access, opening times, prices and restrictions with the municipality or facility before leaving. Check IPMA warnings and on-site instructions; this guide verifies no opening or sea safety.
